Lately I’ve been inspired by flowers and spring.

I was getting a bit bored with my backgrounds. Since I’d been drawn to floral patterns, I decided to give them a try. It felt super awkward at first.

I didn’t think any of my floral backgrounds looked good.

But little by little it became a meditative process. I enjoyed repeating the same marks over and over on my paper even though they often didn’t end up looking like flowers.

Instead of layering with my usual papers, I focused on inks, paint pens, pencil and acrylics (especially neons).

The funny thing is that these floral patterns led me to paint these flower girls, which I never would have created otherwise, and definitely not in the same way.

That’s what I love so much about the creative process… if you let go and follow your inspirations, one thing can just lead you to the next.

When it came to adding my character, I saw these tall ladies with long faces in the layers of paint, so I had to go with it and bring them out of the layers. I’m loving their whimsy.

If you’d like to see how these flower girls evolve, I’ll be posting more over on my instagram, facebook and google+

Have you been creating anything new lately?

This time of year always makes me add bright colors to my paintings. I’d love to hear what you’ve been painting too and will be sure to look for your comments at the end of this post.

And, if you know someone who might be inspired by this post, please feel free to share (there are links to share just above the comments section).

Have an incredible weekend! Happy painting!
