“If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun.” -Katharine Hepburn
…………………
Sometimes a painting takes so many layers before I can pull out the character and find their personality and scene.
Other times, things fall right into place. But usually that only happens when I’m staying within my comfort zone.
So this painting was a surprise to not only uncover a new style for me, using new techniques, but also to have all of the pieces fit together perfectly by following my instincts.
When I painted this piece, I’d been painting a lot of owls and girls.
I was painting a lot, every day, which always helps me know just what supplies and techniques I’m most loving. From there, I can experiment and try new things.
I’d been playing a lot with watercolors and painted pages, so those papers make up the orbs in the sky along with much of her body. Then I added layers of printed tissue papers.
Next I began to define her face. And that’s when the character fell into place. I saw her expression in the india ink and oil paint stick marks and once her posture had been defined, her body came into view.
From there she got her story…
Travelling lightly, she stops nightly to grow roots, knowing that WITH FORGIVENESS, HER HEART SURVIVES AND BLOOMS.

A few years ago, I wrote a novel about a magical world. I was one of 14 writers accepted into a 6 week writing workshop on the east coast. And when I finished my novel, I flew out to Washington DC to meet with my ideal literary agent. But then I got super scared and burned out. Because of that burn-out, I needed to heal... I used to be afraid to raise my hand in class. I’d learned that my ways of thinking and seeing were different from everyone else. When I shared an idea, I was often laughed at or told it was impossible. So I learned to stay quiet and be shy. When I was in the third grade we had an art project where we were supposed... Lately I’ve been going back to painting owls. For awhile I had been creating these very renaissance-style portraits with soft, realistic faces and incredible hair. I enjoyed that I could make them look very human, but still full of magic and color. While I still adore creating these flower girls, I found that these paintings were missing something. After countless attempts in the studio, many... Continue reading
Everyone always asks how I developed my artistic style. I have to say, style was nothing I intentionally developed. It was just the thing that happened when I painted every day. Most often I can look at a finished painting and see that it perfectly reflects who I am in that moment… all of the quirkiness and emotion I sometimes wish I could hide. But... Continue reading
Prints, Books and Originals Available in my shop. …… I’m most inspired by nature and the feelings, emotions and stories I see around me, every day. That’s why it’s so important for me to make sure I take time, each day, to find that inspiration. In the summertime it seems easier to be inspired. My inspirations can come from something as small as a walk... Continue reading
