As I’m painting, I’ll often fall back to the techniques and colors I know will work.

Trying something new feels uncomfortable in the moment.

But when I look back at the photos I take of my paintings at early stages, I can more easily step outside the emotion I feel as the artist creating and just become the viewer.

That’s why I do whatever it takes to get me feeling free and having fun again with my art.

Then I can be loose, remembering there’s no right or wrong way.

Then I can see what I thought felt so uncomfortable is really quite unique and beautiful.

From there I can add that beauty into my next painting with confidence.

So today I want to share with you one of my favorite ways to loosen up and let go in my art.

This project always frees me up so I feel playful and can start painting again.

Sometimes I just get super stuck and don’t even want to paint. This is one of those projects that I come back to again and again whenever I need a little creative boost to have fun.

This project is one I come back to again and again to cover up my art and loosen up. It’s part of an owl painting project from my Whimsical Animals class.

In the video I talk you through my process, explaining how I loosen up and let go in my art.

You’ll also want a small watercolor or sketch to add to your painting. For my collage materials I love layering sheet music, book pages or tissue papers. Feel free to use any of your favorite supplies and just have fun… it’s always good to follow whatever brings you joy.
