All of my early paintings ended up in the basement or trash.
I never thought anyone would want to see my artwork. I was working a draining day-job as an editorial assistant at a newspaper and I thought, “Does it even matter if I paint?”
It hurt my heart to not create, yet I buried my desire and, for years, I stopped painting.
But I learned I couldn’t not be an artist.
And whenever I paint a woman like this that seemed to just come right out of the background layers, I’m reminded why I love to paint. Now I remember that I have to let my true spirit shine… especially when I want to cover up my art.
You’ll see how I cover up my art and add details in the Serendipity 1 – Develop Your Style video below.
In this video preview, I share some of my favorite supplies and techniques for creating a painting with lots of layers. If you’re looking to add more whimsy and freedom to your artwork, paint with your fingertips and add layers of your favorite papers – like sheet music or book pages.
This project is perfect for loosening up and letting go. This is part of a painting project from my Serendipity 1 – Develop Your Style online class, where you’ll learn to build a cohesive body of work and paint in a style that’s unique to YOU.
It’s taken a lot of paintings and mistakes to develop my style, let go and be loose in my art. But learning to paint whimsically and find your artistic voice are completely do-able — you’ll learn how in my Serendipity courses (early registration ends soon).
I started my Serendipity courses in response to feedback I’d gotten from my students. So many said they wanted to be loose and find their own artistic voice, but whenever they learn from another artist they feel like they’re just copying.
So in every class video, I talk you through my painting process, telling you what I’m doing and why, sharing when I get frustrated with my artwork or when I reach an ugly stage and how I work through it, so you can easily be loose in your art and find your artistic voice.
