As you may have seen on my Instagram, I’ve been painting lots of small studies inspired by sketches on paper.
Oftentimes my sketches become stepping stones for my more layered paintings.
In my sketchbook, I try to capture the mood, posture, color layers, and most importantly, the expression on a face. It can feel like a quick snapshot of a feeling or thought.
Then I move back and forth between my sketchbook and large and small paintings on canvas. I love the flow that happens when working on many paintings at once. Each inspires the next.

The Portraits class projects were the inspiration for my latest painting… she’s called ‘Trust In Miracles’ – 11″ x 14″ on flat canvas.
I’d gotten super stuck with my paintings and needed a new place to begin, so I rewatched the class videos.
I always forget my process and need to be reminded to let go. That might sound silly, but I’m a total visual learner and thrive when going deep into an experience. But I often need a little push to get going and find my way. These class videos were the exact guidance I needed to let go.
For this new painting I knew I wanted her to reflect the sense of peace and heart I feel whenever I’m in nature. She’s inspired by the morning walks I’ve been taking before heading into the studio. The trees and water look stunning as the sun rises and sets–full of majesty, enchantment and wonder.
She’s a reminder of the rainbows that appear and new beginnings. Also to carry love and peace through the ever-changing seasons. I hope she brings a bit of light to your day!
