When I started my children’s picture book I had it in mind that I would create a series of sketches and mixed media paintings.
But I had no idea how to make those pieces work as a picture book.
It has taken a lot of trying and retrying, but I am having so much fun with these new paintings.
I was having trouble making my paintings fit a storybook. So I added on to every piece to make it flow as you turned the page.
My book is about monsters in your closet. As the story goes along, the reader is invited to follow the monsters and see where they live. It was especially fun to add on illustrations of whimsical houses in the woods.
As I added to each painting, I started the new piece the same way I had done the original, repeating the background I remembered to achieve a similar look and layered effect.
No matter what I am creating, I always try and remember to have fun. Without play, my work always turns out so tense and I get completely caught up in the perfectionism of it all.
I can’t wait to share the published book with you (very soon)!
If you’d like to follow along as I paint and add to my book, I’m always posting photos daily over on my instagram, facebook and google+
Happy painting!
Ps. If you’d like to paint together, there’s an incredible group gathered already for my new online class PAINTING FOR THE HEART – A Mini Course. Click here to join us anytime.

I have been watching a bit as you went along but may have missed something….where will the words (story) join in …how is that handled?

hi lisa – the words will go on top of the images… on the sides where I’ve added the landscape (i’ve left a bit of room so they’ll be easy to see). the words will be added digitally… one of the next steps that my husband and i are working on now 🙂

I am so excited to see the finished book!! I am looking forward to buying it for my niece and nephew, and a copy for myself. It is beautiful already! I just got your first book and am so inspired by it, so I know this one will be equally inspiring.
