Oftentimes when I’m stuck with my art, I look back at the progress photos from a past painting.
Most of the time, my character looks nothing like it did when I started. It takes lots of beautiful mistakes and so many ugly stages before I can even begin to figure out the best posture, profile and facial gestures.
Yet as I create, my mind tells me I should get it right on the first try (but that never happens).
The other day when this happened, I was working on this new painting (she’s called ‘Strength Within’ 12” x 16” on stretched canvas).
I’d been wanting to paint another female portrait. But she kept looking so rigid and tight.
I couldn’t get her eyes right.
It wasn’t until I added all of the cobalt teal into the background that she finally came into focus.
Sometimes when I look at a finished painting like this and remember all of the layers underneath, I still forget that I was also painting many pieces at once and that each of those pieces went through their own ugly stages.
I’m finishing up a few more female portraits and can’t wait to show them to you! I’ll share more with you very soon.
This project is one I come back to again and again to cover up my art and loosen up. It’s part of an owl painting project from my Whimsical Animals class.
In the video I talk you through my process, explaining my mistakes and frustrations, so you can create more work you love.
