When I started this painting, I had intended it to be a simple face shading demonstration for my online class BLISS.
But once I started painting, I just couldn’t stop.
At first this girl turned into a fox. Then I added a few words.
From there, she had a story to tell.
And once I made a beautiful mistake and added a bit too much hot pink to her cheek, I knew I had to keep adding more layers and let out the painting’s true story.
Whenever I add words to painting I feel like I’m really getting to the bottom of the character’s story.
But so often it takes many tries to get the words right.
I will write poetry with gel pen, then cover it with acrylic paint. I’ll scribble something new over the top with calligraphy ink, not waiting for the paint to dry, and have to smudge it all out again.
But little by little, the words fall into place and add more and more meaning to the painting.
