Do you ever find it hard to cover up your paintings? I do (all the time).
Then sometimes a happy accident happens and it makes me stop and realize I just need to let go.
But so often that’s hard to remember when you’re in the moment.
The other day when this happened, I was working on this new painting (she’s called ‘Messenger of Hope,’ 11” x 14” on cradled wood, so it’s ready to hang with or without a frame).
I’d covered up this woman’s face at least ten times.
Then I dumped water on top and wiped it off to try and recapture the initial features underneath. I tried again and again, but nothing seemed to be working. I set the painting aside to dry.
When I went back to try again, I decided to keep her eyes closed and I fell in love with her face and calm presence. But then I spilled my black india ink all across the background. It was so frustrating. Once the painting dried, I still wanted to cover up that black. So I got out my favorite cobalt blue acrylic and filled in the background, leaving areas in her hair and body showing through. And that’s how she got her flower crown and gentle angel wings.
Whenever I don’t like my painting, it’s an opportunity. I’m not so afraid to ruin it, so I can be bold and take chances. Then I finally get enough courage to let go and paint something new.
I’m putting the finishing touches on a few more female portraits and can’t wait to share them with you very soon!
If you’ve been wanting to paint faces with more freedom, I’ve put together my FACES – Mixed Media Portraits class to help your loosen up and let go.
In this video, you’ll see how I add layers to my eyes and faces, using some of my favorite mixed media supplies like tissue papers, acrylics, inks, oil paintsticks, paint pen and water-soluble pencil.
“I’m taking FACES to help me find more freedom and whimsy in my style. What I have also found as I take this class is inspiration-inspiration in finding “my voice” with the art I create. The class group has been so fun! All the lovely comments and art from co-students has been a joy for me.” – Alison Pillette
