Do you ever struggle to be free in your art? I do (all of the time).
When I take a chance and feel like I’ve completely messed up a painting, I stop having fun.
Sometimes I find myself trying to do the same thing over and over, just so I don’t make a mistake. I get so attached to having a finished painting, that I stop enjoying the process.
The other day when this happened, I went back to this painting that I’d been working on for ages (she’s called ‘New Dawn’ 11” x 14” on canvas).
The unfinished painting had been sitting in my studio. The face looked so rigid and tight. I didn’t know what to do next.
So I covered everything up and started to play.
I covered up the messy details in the background with some turquoise blue fluid acrylic. I made the colors of my character brighter and added even more drips of acrylic inks and liquid watercolors to her wild hair.
I started to just have fun with no right or wrong. Then, from that place of joy, the painting finally started to come together.
In this video preview, I share how I begin to transform a painting I am not liking into something new, using the existing layers as a starting point as I layer my favorite mixed media supplies. In class, I share the inspiration behind each painting, so you can learn how to paint more freely and easily develop your own style.
“This course was the in depth instruction that I was really looking for to take some of the quick pieces I’d done and really develop them further. Watching Juliette work through a piece until she really felt the character develop was so helpful. Knowing that I wasn’t making any mistakes and that if something wasn’t working – just changing my tool or supply could get me right through that tough spot was so useful.”
Happy Painting!
