Lately, I’ve been spending as much time as possible painting in the sunshine on my backyard patio.
I’m slowing down after spending a week of teaching, connecting and painting in Port Townsend, Washington with my dear friends Mindy Lacefield and Danielle Daniel. The experience reminded me of the importance of connecting with others and feeling like a kid again. So I’m scheduling lots of local art dates with friends, building forts out of the sofa cushions and watching classic movies like Back to the Future and Indiana Jones with my husband.
So much of this light-hearted-ness has been channeled into a very special online course I have coming up… I’ll share the details with you very soon!
In the meantime, I’m so excited that How To Paint An Owl 2 is now available as a self-paced course. Find the details here.
And to celebrate all of this creativity, I have a new VIDEO for you…
I always have 5-6 paintings going at once. That way, there is always one that is dry and ready for second layers.
I recorded the process of making multiple backgrounds…I hope you enjoy the video!
With music by my friends’ the wiggly tendrils
I’m kind of in love with the intro and outro for my videos that my lovely husband Brian put together… with stunning video footage shot by our good friend and photographer Dave Kreisman.
Have a Wonderful Weekend!
……………..
ps. I share more of these backgrounds, loosening up techniques and how I play with layering art supplies in my newest online workshop, HOW TO PAINT AN OWL 2… now available as a self paced class, so you can skip ahead and go at your own pace.
pps. I’ve added lots of new prints and original paintings to my etsy shop here.

A few years ago, I wrote a novel about a magical world. I was one of 14 writers accepted into a 6 week writing workshop on the east coast. And when I finished my novel, I flew out to Washington DC to meet with my ideal literary agent. But then I got super scared and burned out. Because of that burn-out, I needed to heal... Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about all of the ways I stay inspired. Having fun and learning to let go have become essential to my creative process. For me that means slowing down and keeping calm, reading in the sunshine, stepping outside at midnight to watch for shooting stars, doodling, taking long walks in the woods, having bonfires in the backyard, going barefoot in... This video is one of the backgrounds we create for a project in my online workshop Serendipity 2 – Loosening Up With Mixed Media. In this 9 minute video I share one of my favorite mixed media techniques for creating a lusciously layered background. In class, we’ll layer all sorts of art supplies – oil paintsticks, watercolors, pastel, ink, acrylics, pencil, papers and pen. You’ll... Continue reading
I used to be afraid to raise my hand in class. I’d learned that my ways of thinking and seeing were different from everyone else. When I shared an idea, I was often laughed at or told it was impossible. So I learned to stay quiet and be shy. When I was in the third grade we had an art project where we were supposed... Lately I’ve been going back to painting owls. For awhile I had been creating these very renaissance-style portraits with soft, realistic faces and incredible hair. I enjoyed that I could make them look very human, but still full of magic and color. While I still adore creating these flower girls, I found that these paintings were missing something. After countless attempts in the studio, many... Continue reading

Enjoyed the video. Thanks for the inspiration, I can't wait to get home from work (is that what I'm supposed to be doing?) and start playing in my journal! Anxiously awaiting news of your next online course! Happy Friday!
