When I’m at a creative block, I’ll come up with a million reasons why I can’t or shouldn’t paint. This often happens when I’m trying something new.
I’ll be creating a character that looks too weird and all I want to do is cover it up so no one else will ever see it. To get through this block, I go back and forth between painting that new thing and staying in my comfort zone.
Sometimes I’ll go back to painting owls or using my favorite cobalt blue or florescent pink hues. I do whatever it takes to get me feeling free again.
In these videos you’ll see some of my favorite ways to fix mistakes, play and overcome creative blocks.
Whenever I play and layer supplies in new ways, my paintings seem to come to life and a whole new world opens up.
Mistakes always happen while I’m painting. But whenever I paint, I feel the freedom to let go, play and make a beautiful mess. That’s when the magic happens.
It’s taken a lot of paintings, successes and mistakes to know what works best for my creative process and style. If you’d like to learn more ways to paint freely and develop your own unique artistic voice, I’ve put together my Serendipity 1 – Develop Your Style online course (which is available as a self-paced course for a limited time) and Serendipity 2 – Loosening Up With Mixed Media (registration closes June 1st).
Happy painting!
