Hello, Friends!
Lately, I’ve been thinking about the ways I’ve developed my style and learned to be loose in my art.
When I first started painting my whimsical characters in 2009, I used lots of untraditional supplies like glitter glue, bleeding art tissue paper and crayons. As soon as I started to have fun, my paintings seemed to come to life.
I wanted to return to this playful approach.
Because whenever I get stuck with a painting, can’t loosen up or just need a burst of creative inspiration, I come back to play.
While I love to paint my colorful first layers to let go, sometimes I just want to keep it simple.
That’s when I get out my watercolors and a sketchbook. This has become part of my daily painting practice.
And I try to do this every day (sometimes many times each day). It’s become a sort of meditation.
Whenever I paint I feel happiness. So I wanted to paint and be happy more often.
Now I’ve got my little carryall ready with my watercolors and sketchbook. If I ever need a little calm during my day, I just grab my watercolors, sit down, and paint.
Even if it’s just for a few minutes, I always feel happier. It’s about creating a little bit of space throughout my day. From there, my creative spirit is set free.
This daily painting practice has also completely changed my creative process and made it SO much easier for me to get started and finish paintings I love…
It really came down to 3 things…
- I wanted to make it super easy for myself to paint and feel good
- I wanted to simplify my creative practice and have fun
- I wanted to explore new techniques and be even looser in my art
The invitation is to feel more joy and calm in your day, take a moment to pause and let yourself paint. Take a sketchbook and create a few paintings of your own.
