Every painting has an ugly stage.
And it’s always at that point, where I’ve repainted a face ten times, that I feel like giving up.
As I paint, I stay really conscious of how I’m feeling and when I get frustrated.
Part of my creative process is trying new things and covering up what I don’t like, which is forever changing and evolving just like everything else in life.
But I’ll often think, “I just want to throw this painting out.”
The other day when this happened, I poured water on top. I smudged out the face and made a total mess.
I was afraid to do this because I liked the face, but it just didn’t resonate. It felt free-ing to let go and cover it up.
But I couldn’t get there right away.
Oftentimes it takes getting stuck in that ugly stage to finally get enough courage to let go and paint something new.
You can see some of the techniques I used to loosen up and let go in the Serendipity 1 – Develop Your Style video below.

This is one of the backgrounds we create for a project in Serendipity 1 – Develop Your Style class. You can use any supplies that you have to create layers and play. You’ll learn to loosen up and develop a cohesive body of work in your own unique style.
“I really found that after this course I was able to not let negative self talk that was holding me back so often with my art get me down. Juliette is so relatable that I felt she’s been there and felt that too and she had solutions that really worked.” -Abi Bell
Oftentimes when I’m struggling to be loose with my art, I get out a few unfinished pieces that are stuck at ugly stages and I cover them up. Then I can finally let go and be loose in my art. I’m not so afraid to ruin my ugly paintings, so I don’t care about covering them up. I make a total mess.
