Do you ever struggle to cover up your art?
This happens to me ALL the time ❤️
Usually it’s the eyes or face that I don’t want to cover up. Oftentimes they look too perfect and defined. I know they’re not finished, yet I don’t want to ruin my painting.
The other day when this happened, I was in the middle of this new painting (she’s called Compassionate Souls,’ 20” x 24” on stretched canvas).
If you look closely, you’ll see her eyes and lips have lots of scratches.
That’s something I was doing last summer.
I was SO afraid to cover up her face, that she sat in my studio for nearly a year – with pretty much this same face, but no body or hair.
I had no idea what to do next.
It wasn’t until I ran out of dry canvases with faces on them that I finally picked her up again and wasn’t so afraid to see what would happen.
I’d been spalttering inks and watercolors, so I laid the canvas on the floor, stood on a chair and dripped cadmium yellow and walnut ink.
It was so much fun! I splashed on more and more until she had a BIG pool above her eyes. Then I added acrylic paints and let them splatter onto her face.
Suddenly it all didn’t seem so precious anymore.
Whenever I play, it helps me feel calm and connected. Then I can follow my heart and paint without the pressure of everything having to be perfect. I hope she inspires you too!
In this video you’ll see some of the playful techniques I use to add color, softness and shading to my face (it’s all about play, which helps me keep my characters loose).
Whimsical Animals is all about play and painting art you LOVE.class
In class, we’ll layer all sorts of art supplies – oil paintsticks, watercolors, pastels, inks, acrylics, water-soluble pencil, papers and paint pens. You’ll learn how to paint any whimsical animal more freely, so you can easily develop your own style (and have more fun).
“This class changed my art life forever! One of the best classes I have ever taken. Juliette is so clear and easy to follow along. I never thought I would be able to paint an owl, or any animal. now I just paint them easily! I am forever grateful to this class, thank you Juliette!” -Angelica Escalera
“Juliette shares every step of her creative process in an honest way. The videos are worth watching over and over. I am inspired to try so many new things!” -Mo Brady
