“I held my breath as we do sometimes to stop time when something wonderful has touched us…”
-Mary Oliver
……….
MOON RISE is a painting that started out as a frustrated bear.
I wasn’t happy with the painting and whenever I don’t know what to do with a character these days, it seems, I always turn it into a bear.
With this piece I was so unhappy with the colors in my bear. It all felt flat… except for his feather necklace.
So, I covered up most of that bear with splotches of my current favorite colors of acrylic (yellow, purple and warm gray), using a plastic palette knife.
And I left that feather necklace, which became the inspiration for the rest of the piece and helped it evolve.
From there, the girl with the crown first emerged from the paint. But, for some reason, I didn’t like her face. She made me uncomfortable and seemed so unexpressive from the inside, like she was holding up a wall.
So I turned her into a lion.
And that lion seemed to inspire strength in the character. From there I was able to find the MOON RISE princess (or queen) in the painting.
I added her feathers and adorned her with jewelry. And gave her the ocean and a ship to travel the world.
With the sea and sky as her guides, her heart remains grounded, knowing that all she ever really needs is to release the MOON LIGHT inside.
……….
I hope you enjoy a phenomenal weekend!
Happy painting!
