Sketchbook Paintings

Welcome! I’m so excited to share this gift with you. In this class, you’ll get techniques and guidance for being loose in your art, so you can begin to develop your style.

Hi, I’m Juliette, and I work with artists to help them find their artistic voice and loosen up. My students are heart-centered artists who want to create art they love and enjoy the creative process.

Without freedom in your art, it’s really hard to have your own unique style and artistic voice. So, for now, let’s focus on having fun and then if you need help with developing your style, I’m happy to help with that too.

In this class we’ll create two mixed media paintings to get you closer to being loose in your art.

From these sketchbook paintings you’ll have:

Motivation to keep your creative inspiration flowing
Confidence to trust your process and less fear of covering something up
Techniques to develop your style, get unstuck, and be loose in your art
AND a way to bring more light and joy to your day

Your Supply List

We’re using simple supplies in this class, so you can get more materials as you go or easily include what you already have and use in your creative practice. I’ve included the brands and details for what I’m using, but feel free to use what’s best for you (I’m not affiliated with any of these products, it’s just what I love):

*sketchbook – 8″ x 8″ Bee Paper Aquabee Super Deluxe Sketchbook
*watercolors – Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint Set
*watersoluble oil pastels – Caran d’ache NeoColor 2
*paint pens – Sharpie water-based, white, florescent pink
*water-soluble pencil (Black) – Stabilo
*pencil sharpener – General’s All Art Pencil Sharpener
*water bucket
*thin brush – Princeton Real Value Brush Set – 9105, Synthetic Sable, Short Handle, Set of 3

*If you don’t have a stabillo pencil for this project, any watersoluble drawing tool will work too (a watercolor pencil, inktense block or watersoluble oil pastel).

In this class, we’ll focus on creating mixed-media paintings. Start by drawing your lines and adding water for shading—a perfect way to experiment with new characters or create a quick painting. I’ll be working in my sketchbook (93lb paper), which is what I usually have with me, but these are fun paintings to do on any kind of paper. You can even tear them out of your sketchbook and add them to your art journal. Or use them as inspiration and motivation for your more in-depth mixed-media paintings.

For now, enjoy experimenting with art supplies and loosening up. Don’t feel obligated to replicate what I’ve created. During this class, follow what you enjoy, whether in each painting or your daily life—shapes or colors—and incorporate them into your artwork.

These daily sketchbook paintings transformed my creative practice. I encourage you to create them daily, even if you just have a few minutes. It’s all about staying loose in your art so you can develop your style.

Things To Remember…

Avoid excessive water, particularly around the face and features, when blending the watersoluble pencil. You can always return to add more pencil for refining facial features and other elements.

Sketch any character you desire. Combine your favorite elements from different characters and projects in your own unique way to develop your style.

As you create, notice what brings you the most joy—identify the colors that stand out and the supplies you love. Focus on incorporating more of your favorite elements to further develop your style.

Create many sketches at once. Add layers to one while the others dry. Then come back an add more layers again to really create depth and shading in your artwork.

There’s no right or wrong way. Documenting my painting process in photos has helped me be kinder to myself. I often assume I can sit down and paint what’s in my head or paint the same way I did last time in my studio (but that never happens).

It took SO many different jobs as a photographer, gallery assistant, floral designer and more before I finally realized the only thing I could put my heart into was being a full-time artist.
