WITH GLITTERING EYES. Original Available Here.(11×14″ on Canvas Panel) Prints available in my shop.
………….
This is a demo painting that I did during my Happy Painting class at the Lucky Star art retreat in Texas.
It was so much fun to create outside by the river. Everyone in class seemed to have the best art supplies too, so we all shared and got inspired from one another.
I got to experiment with all sorts of supplies I normally wouldn’t think of: new spray paints and stencils, plaid tissue papers and carnival tickets.
The carnival tickets reminded me of one of the most fun and magical experiences I’ve ever had…
When I was five, my parents took me to Noah’s Ark in the Wisconsin Dells. And I played skee ball on a magical machine.
I just so happened to play on a skee ball machine that spit out one ticket for every point. So if I got the ball in the 20 hole, I’d get 20 tickets! It was amazing. And as a five-year-old, this really set me up to dream.
I remember being at the prize counter and getting something for everyone in my family. And a few magical things for myself too- a musical jewelry box with a butterfly on top that moved to the music, a green monster puppet named Frida with a roll out tongue, and one of those fiber optic light strand sculptures that twirled to music (I loved having it on in my room at night. Every light reflected ten times onto the ceiling ad walls like stars).
I felt like a princess that day. Like Charlie winning the golden ticket.
And that’s how this painting got it’s name, inspired by one of my favorite Roald Dahl quotes: “Watch WITH GLITTERING EYES the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
A reminder to keep believing in the biggest dreams.
