Over the next few weeks, I’ll be inviting you to a series of little creative celebrations — each week a mini-class with a fun video, a simple art tip, and a story from my studio — I think you’ll love it.
I’m Juliette — artist, author, and mentor. For over 15 years, I’ve painted thousands of pieces, grown a community of collectors, and guided artists on their creative journeys through my courses, books, and retreats. I know the magic of watching color come alive on the canvas — and the frustration when nothing seems to work. And I know how much it matters to have someone walk beside you on your path.
Today, I invite you to take a moment and remember what it was like to be creative as a child. How did you feel? What did you love to do? Are you still doing that now? I’d love to know.
I remember taking all my art supplies out onto a blanket in the grass. It’s what reignited my painting practice fifteen years ago and led to the start of my creative business. At the time, I’d just been fired from my favorite job. I was burned out and needed to renew. I hadn’t painted in years. I’d hidden that part of myself away. I didn’t think it would be possible to be a full-time artist. I thought, what good is it to be creative? Well, here I am, fifteen years later, and I can’t even express how grateful I am that I followed that whisper to paint — and grateful that so many of you joined me on this journey.
That’s why it’s time for a celebration!
In gratitude for all of this and for you, I’m happy to officially open my gratitude sale: 50% off my most-loved classes with lifetime access, including my most popular class, Serendipity 1 – Develop Your Style, the playful Whimsical Animals class, and The Joy of Painting.
(If you’d prefer monthly or annual access, you’ll also find all of these classes inside my Membership.)
Let’s paint together!
This Week’s Mini-Class: Serendipity 1 – Develop Your Style
We’re starting the celebration with a full-length tutorial from Serendipity 1 – Develop Your Style. You can explore the full course here.
This week we’re focusing on loosening up and developing your style — especially when that blank page feels intimidating. I thought this would be the perfect first mini-class because so many of you have expressed the longing to find your artistic voice — and in this video, I dive into ways to develop your style and have more fun.
In this 23 minute project, we’re going to focus on working on an untraditional surface to develop your style, experiment with new supplies and create a whimsical painting.
ART SUPPLIES
*CARDBOARD
I’ll be working on cardboard that I’ve torn from a box I was about to throw away.
*GRAPH PAPER
This is not essential at all, but something I found in my art supply closet and thought it would be fun to use. You can use any kind of matte paper you have and want to use for cutting out shapes.
Additional Supplies (use any supplies you love):
*xacto knife and cutting mat or scissors
*glue (my favorite is Liquitex Matte Medium)
*black india ink
*acrylic paints
*tissue papers
*washi tape
*acrylic inks
*alcohol inks
*stabilo pencil
Art tip: If your water-soluble pencil smudges, try adding a light spray of fixatif to keep it in place. Mistakes can feel frustrating, but often these “happy accidents” lead to new techniques — sometimes even my favorite paintings. They’re a reminder to let go and trust the creative process.
There’s no need to have all of these exact supplies and colors. I always recommend choosing the colors that you love most. I will be painting on cardboard again, but feel free to paint on any untraditional surface (wood, old books, vintage coloring books etc).
I’d love to hear from you, too: if you’re inspired by this week’s tutorial, I’d love to see what you create.
So, consider this your moment. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to begin — or begin again — take this as a sign. Get out the paints, write the words, share the work. Say yes to your creativity.
For a long time, I thought I had to do this alone. But I’ve come to see that creativity thrives in connection.
Thank you for being here, and for allowing me to be creative as I support you to do the same. I hope these weekly sparks brighten your days and remind you that your creativity matters.
Sending so much love and gratitude. Happy painting!
xo Juliette
