One of the things I try to capture in my paintings is the way I see. Not necessarily literally through my eyes, but through my mind’s eye. The way I see color, thoughts, wishes, and dreams is like this – in sweeps of color. Something may look like a dot or fingerprint, but it is a wish of abundance for you. A lot of that interpretation happens while I create, through every layer, and in the transformation of each painting.

I’ve included a thick fingerprint of color to her upper right, representing the guiding moonlight. It is also a way of including my DNA in my work, which, of course, is made by human hands.

With these recent paintings, I’ve been thinking less about interpreting the natural world literally and thinking more about how I can interpret what I see and how I can turn that into a feeling and bring that back onto the canvas.

It’s a shift in perspective that has come from taking steps away from the studio, especially near the water, that has helped me get into a flow and translate it into color.
