When I begin a painting, I don’t have a plan.
To get started, I create the background with 3-4 colorful layers (sometimes more).
Then I sketch a loose face and add more color. From there, the face completely changes as I add more layers.
The other day, I was working on this new painting (she’s called ‘Guardian Of Dreams’ 12” x 16” on stretched canvas).
I wish I had photos to show you all of the mess and mistakes underneath.
It’s difficult to be loose and stay in that intuitive flow with my art.
Play is a solution, but sometimes I just keep painting over a face again and again. I just can’t get it right.
Moments like these remind me to take a step away, turn off that inner critic and go back to a childlike mindset where there’s no right or wrong… that’s where the beauty emerges.
Oftentimes, it just takes being okay with my mistakes to get there.
I’ve started a few smaller paintings and can’t wait to share them with you soon!
I’ve been getting so many questions about how to loosen up in your art, so I’ve put together my online class Joy Of Painting to share lots of painting techniques and mixed media supplies.
With every in-depth project I also share a quick piece you can create with just a few supplies in under 10 minutes so you can always get started and play.
