With all of my artwork, I follow an intuitive painting process.

After a few background layers (and many attempts at the character’s eyes and face), something finally starts to come out of the paint that resonates with my soul.

Then I add more and more layers to bring out that heart, using spray paint, oil paintsticks, acrylics, inks, paint pens, water soluble pencil and pastels.

But the other day, I got super stuck on this new painting. It went through so many evolutions… first it was an owl, then a bear, then a cat and nothing felt right.

So I looked back at a few of my recent paintings and remembered this first lion’s bangs and from there my new lion was born.

At first I didn’t want to call these new creatures lions. They seemed to be a blending of all beings. That’s what gives them their wisdom. But they’re also very much about strength and courage.  

It’s part of my process to cover and uncover, and lately I’ve been trying to allow all of those layers to shine through, revealing more and more of the painting’s story. 

These new paintings are about following your heart with bravery, freedom and wisdom, reflecting on where you’ve come from and where you wish to be, so you can shine your own light onto the world.
