Painting is an intuitive process for me.

If I’ve the inclination to try a swipe of yellow orange azo ink across the body, I’ll swipe a thick layer along the bottom, then use what’s left on my fingertips to add polka dots throughout the rest of the painting to make it all fit together.

But sometimes that doesn’t work out.

The ink can smudge with wet acrylic and make a mess (or sometimes give me a beautiful mistake).

Then I have to add more solid areas or definition to keep everything in balance.

So often these layers and happy accidents lead to my favorite paintings. When I remember this, I can be brave and paint without the pressure of everything having to be perfect, allowing me to approach my artwork with more freedom.

That’s when the magic happens.
