Serendipity 2 – Loosen Up & Let Go
In this online painting class you’ll learn to let go and be loose in your art.
I started my Serendipity courses in response to feedback I’d gotten from my students. So many had said they wanted to paint more freely and find their artistic voice, but whenever they learned from another artist, they felt like they were just copying.
So in this workshop, you’ll learn many different mixed media techniques to help you loosen up, build a cohesive collection of work, and paint in a style that’s unique to YOU.
What Will You Learn?
This class is perfect if you’re looking to loosen up and feel more free in your artwork.
Inside this course, you’ll find more than twenty-four projects that’ll help you develop and strengthen your artistic voice. In addition to in-depth lessons, there’s also many shorter (10-30 minute) projects that’ll help you get started, even when you don’t have a lot of time.
You’ll learn to paint portraits, whimsical animals, women, imaginary creatures, art journal pages and so much more. We’ll also loosen up by painting with our fingertips, creating layered backgrounds and experiment with mixing all of my favorite art supplies.
In each video I share my honest struggles and mistakes along with the techniques I use to work through those frustrations so I can have fun with my artwork and let go.
This course includes all new painting projects, so if you’ve already taken another class with me, this will take everything a lot further and help you develop your own style.
So many videos and Juliette’s helpful commentary and guidance through the whole process. It really helped me loosen up while experimenting with many different media and techniques. Other classes I’ve taken just speed edit through the most important parts, while Juliette takes the time to explain what motivates her artistic process. That, for me, is the value of a class.
I am 64 and have always wanted to draw and paint. You show us all of the phases of the piece – the good, the bad, the ugly, and the finished wonderful face. Then we see the finished piece. Now when I struggle to get to the end of the process, I know that it’s okay to take a while to get there.
I learn best when I see you paint while you give information as to why your painting is working or is in need of correction. The way you work through your corrections gives me insight into my own issues and encourages me to keep going. Your videos are fun, light, colorful and always a pleasure to watch. My Story
For years I stopped painting. All of my artwork ended up in the basement or trash.
I thought, “What’s the point of making art?”
It seemed too painful to create if I couldn’t do it all the time. But now I realize that not creating was what held me back and really crushed my spirit.
I’ve built my creative career around following my heart and focusing on what I enjoy doing most, which has led to thousands of collectors, customers and students around the world, press in publications like Glamour Magazine, Somerset Studio and Oprah.com, being published in multiple books, having five books of my own on Amazon, launching eighteen online classes, opportunities to teach in-person and sales of originals, prints, cards, calendars, books and more in galleries and shops around the world.
It’s taken a lot of paintings and mistakes to develop my style and paint with freedom. But learning to be loose in your art is completely do-able with the techniques and tools I use to let go and create all my paintings.

Having fun, learning to let go and not being afraid to cover up my paintings have now become essential to my creative process. It takes courage to create and be loose in your art. It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed about letting go and following your dreams.
So many frustrations come up and create roadblocks:
- What’s the point of making all this art?
- I don’t even want to hang this on my wall, why would someone else like it?

Art was the thing I loved to do growing up and in high school. But when I graduated college, I didn’t know how to sell my art or make money from being creative.
When I graduated college, I went to work as an arts journalist, writing about the arts for newspapers and magazines. It took many different jobs as a journalist, photographer, graphic designer, floral designer, website developer and more before I finally realized the only thing I could put my heart into was being a full-time artist.
Then in the summer of 2009 I lost my job. It was the first job I ever really loved (as a landscaper). I took time to renew my spirit and started painting again.
To heal my spirit, I went back to what I adored most as a child. I took my art supplies into the backyard and started to play. And that’s what started all of my whimsical paintings.
My hope is that in sharing my creative process, you feel more connected and supported as you create, so you can learn to let go and love what you paint.

What Materials WIll I Need?
I’m a big believer that you don’t need a lot of expensive art supplies to paint. All you really need to get started are some basic drawing and painting supplies in your favorite colors like acrylic paints, a cheap set of Crayola watercolors, a pencil, brushes and something to paint on.
Over the years, I’ve experimented with layering all sorts of traditional and nontraditional art supplies – oil paintsticks, pastels, acrylics, inks, pencil, papers, pen and so many more… and I will be sharing all I’ve learned with you!
You will receive a full supply list once you register – with details on my favorite brands, colors, where to shop and more. With each project, I also share a detailed color and supply list and give you a good look at my painting table so you know just what materials I am using and why.

In this video sneak peek I share some of my favorite techniques for adding layers and pattern to my artwork.
I’m always working on many paintings at once. As one painting dries, I start a character on another piece. I move from one painting to the next, starting again and again until a painting uplifts my soul. This helps keep my paintings loose and free.
Whenever I’m stuck with a painting I go back to painting backgrounds. This helps me to loosen up, play and experiemnt so that I can paint more freely once I add my character (especially the eyes and face).
I love mixing inks and acrylic paints together to get unusual colors that I then repeat throughout a painting collection. If you’re looking to paint more freely and make your paintings look more organic, don’t cover everything up in your painting. Instead, when you don’t like something, add a thin layer of ink on top, but keep the underneath layers showing through.
Whenever I’m fearful and doubt creeps in, I’ve learned to put a painting aside and pick up another unfinished piece and try again. I always have to return to having fun. Then I feel that freedom and flow. In this video preview, you’ll see how my characters so often begin and evolve into something completely new.

Not at all. I only have a few supplies and brands that I recommend in particular because I’ve found they work best together. You’ll only need an iphone, scanner, or camera if you want to share your work in the private Facebook Group.
Can I share the workshop site, info and videos with a friend?
Please keep in mind, I have really put all my heart into this workshop and I’d really appreciate it if you didn’t share the links with anyone who has not paid for the course.
Do I need to know how to paint, draw, or be artistic?
