Juliette Crane How to Paint an Owl 2

I wanted to create a course that would help you build a library of characters and creatures that you could quickly create and then easily add to in a style that is unique to YOU.

Having fun, learning to let go and not being afraid to cover up my paintings have become essential to my creative process. I’ve fallen in love with mixed media painting and out of all of the painting techniques I’ve ever tried, the one thing I always return to is remembering to have fun with whatever it is I’m creating. This brings joy into the process, which inevitably gets infused into your artwork and always makes anyone who sees it smile..

In this 6 Week course, I’ll share all of my simple shape animal templates so that you can easily create whatever animal is unique to you and really make it your own. We’ll also play with painting backgrounds and layering, experiment with lots of different art supplies, loosen up with drawing and coloring in our sketchbooks and have fun bringing all of these animals to life. It’s all about giving you a place to begin, so your imagination can wander.

I design my courses with busy people in mind, so it’s easy for you to focus on what you’d really like to learn when you have the time.

The lessons are designed to make creating fun, easy and completely un-intimidating. I’m a big believer in taking the parts you love most and running with them so you enjoy getting creative. And, if you don’t have the time, there’s no need to go through everything all at once.

Feel free to share your artwork whenever you like. There’s a private discussion group, gallery and facebook group for students to connect, share, support and learn from each other. All in an encouraging and friendly environment that you can enjoy right from home.

You don’t need any painting experience or expensive art supplies to take these classes-all you really need are a few paints and brushes (your hands work just fine) and an openness to play. Once you register, you’ll receive an email with the class log-in details. If you don’t find the email in your inbox after 48 hours, please contact Brian at

I’ve never taken an online course. How does it work?

how to create whimsical animals is an online painting class. once you register, you will receive the login and password needed to access the class’s private website. the class website consists of a private blog (where lessons are posted in the form of text, videos and photos), a private gallery (where students can upload their artwork and make comments on others’ paintings, if they wish), and a private discussion group (where students can ask questions, make comments and get to know one another). during class, i’ll be in the discussion group and gallery, answering questions and making comments too. students also get downloadable pdfs of each lesson with all of the text and photos and have access to the private class website for a year.

What If I’ve taken the How To Paint An Owl or How To Paint A Girl E-course…will I still learn something new?

absolutely! all of the mixed media techniques, backgrounds and animal templates are completely new. we’ll get more into painting and layering too! so if you’ve been wanting to take your girls or owls a bit further, this is the class to take.

Do I have to complete every assignment?

no. but i know you’ll learn even more and have a ton of fun if you do. and, please, don’t feel rushed! you’ll have plenty of time.

Will there be a pdf from the class?

yes. i have free downloadable pdfs of each lesson with all of the class photos and text.

Do I need to buy all of the supplies?

not at all. i only have a few supplies and brands that i recommend in particular because i’ve found they work best together. and you’ll only need a scanner or camera if you want to participate in our online gallery.

Can I share the workshop site, info and videos with a friend?

please keep in mind, i have really put all my heart into this workshop (and all of my paintings) and i’d really appreciate it if you didn’t share the links with anyone who has not paid for the workshop.

Do I need to know how to paint, draw, or be artistic?

this workshop is for anyone and everyone. whether you haven’t painted since you were in kindergarten or if you’re an avid crafter or artist looking to learn new techniques, this class is for you. my intention is to get a fabulous group together and share with you a place to begin so you’re creativity can wander in an encouraging environment.

Can I get additional critique from you?

of course. i’ll be here to make comments and give feedback whenever you need it.

What if I get behind?

Please don’t feel rushed. You have time to work at your own pace.

Can I share my work on my blog, FB page, instagram?

Can I sell originals or reproductions of the work created from this workshop and/or use the work for publication or submissions?

I kindly ask that you use good judgement when doing so. If you take what you learn from what I share, be sure to add your personality and make it into your own.

If you are entering your work for publication or any other submission, please be sure you have infused the artwork with your own original ideas.

If you’re selling originals or reproductions of something similar to one of my characters or class projects, please also mention my name and the class you’ve taken as your influences in either your shop listing or on social media and include a link to

After having so much fun with your Paint an Owl class, I had to expand & take your Whimsical Characters class. I learned so much & the techniques you use really make me feel good about my artwork (no natural abilities here). Your videos and lessons are very detailed & easy to follow (I even put my iPad next to me & stopped & started it again & again while I drew my first character step-by-step). I love that I have access to the class for a few months — I was pretty busy during the class time so just skimmed most of the lessons & will go through everything step-by-step when life settles down. The style of the Whimsical Characters art is not something that would fit in my more formal home filled with Asian antiques, but I feel like I have learned so much (backgrounds, etc.) that I will definitely use the techniques in future art. Thank you — it’s been perfect for this beginner! I especially liked the videos where you talked through, explaining everything. – Dottie P
This class was great! Juliette takes you from sketchbook to completing a painting. There’s tons of info and techniques! This is the most complete course I’ve found on creating a variety of animals. – Lynda Metcalf
