“Do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect.” -Alan Cohen
This is the January Bonus Project for my online course SERENDIPITY- A YEAR IN MIXED MEDIA. And, I have to say, it was just so much fun to create.
The thing I seem to be coming back to most in my artwork is enjoying the creative process. For me, there is just something so free-ing in letting go and seeing where the paint and layers take me.
I seem to always start with layers of inks or paint with various papers (tissue papers, lokta papers, book pages). Sometimes those layers turn into shapes and symbols. Then, always, I add my character.
Something I have been mindful of lately in my artwork is to not overwork a piece. I am loving the spontaneous nature of things and I have a tendency to cover it up when I start thinking too much.
I start thinking about my character and how others will see her. I think about my symbols and wonder whether others will know what they are.
By keeping in the moment and working quickly (setting aside my painting before I cover up the good parts), I am having more fun with my artwork and really see my inner spirit shine through.
For this art journal page, I layered tissue papers, book and dictionary pages, acrylics, inks, and pencil. I also wanted to give the girl a bit of grounding in her abstract, painted environment, so I added a few realistic elements like a horizon line and a flower to pull everything together.
